How it Works: Fluoxetine belongs to a class of medications called selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). It is believed to increase the levels of serotonin, a chemical in the brain, which helps improve mood.

Prozac Capsules Usage and Safety

Dosage: Fluoxetine HCl

Side Effects:

• Common: Nausea, dizziness, headache, anxiety, nervousness, drowsiness, insomnia, fatigue, weakness, diarrhea, upset stomach, dry mouth, loss of appetite, excessive sweating.

Drug Interactions:

• Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs), thioridazine, other antidepressants (SSRIs, tricyclics), lithium, anti-infectives, cancer drugs, asthma drugs, medications for nausea and vomiting, painkillers, diuretics, anticoagulants (e.g., warfarin, dabigatran), acetylsalicylic acid (Aspirin) and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (e.g., ibuprofen), tamoxifen, antiarrhythmics, diabetes medications, other serotonin-affecting drugs (e.g., lithium, linezolid, tryptophan, St. John’s Wort, triptans), certain pain medications (e.g., fentanyl, tramadol, tapentadol, meperidine, methadone, pentazocine), certain cough medications (e.g., dextromethorphan), sedatives (e.g., benzodiazepines).

Indication:

• Prescribed to relieve symptoms of: Depression, bulimia, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD).

When Not to Use:

• Do not use if you are allergic to Fluoxetine or any of its components, currently or recently took thioridazine, or currently or recently took MAOIs (e.g., phenelzine, moclobemide).

Prozac Capsules Precautions:

• May cause an acute attack of glaucoma. An eye examination before starting the medication can help identify if you are at risk of angle-closure glaucoma.

Prozac Capsules Warnings:

1. Suicidal thoughts and actions can occur in any age group but may be more likely in patients 18 to 24 years old. If this happens, consult your doctor immediately.
2. Fluoxetine should not be used in children under the age of 8 years.
3. Inform your doctor if you have epilepsy or experience an increase in seizure frequency; Fluoxetine may need to be discontinued.
