Risperidone belongs to the benzisoxazole derivatives, acting as an antipsychotic agent with a unique mechanism. It inhibits serotonin and norepinephrine reuptake, exerting antidepressant effects by antagonizing alpha-1 (α1), alpha-2 (α2), and histamine (H1) receptors. Additionally, it blocks D2 dopaminergic receptors in the mesolimbic pathway and 5-HT2A serotonergic receptors in the brain.

Dosage

Dosage should strictly follow medical advice. For adults, initial doses vary: starting at 2mg daily for schizophrenia, increasing to 4-8mg daily; for mania, initial dose is 2mg daily with adjustments up to 6mg daily. Elderly and children dosages vary based on weight and condition specifics.

In case of Overdose

No specific antidote exists; monitor vital signs and apply supportive measures. Cardiovascular monitoring is crucial for detecting potential arrhythmias. Consider gastric lavage, activated charcoal, and laxatives.

Missed Dose

Take missed doses as soon as remembered; do not double up on doses.

How To Use

Take orally after diluting with water or orange juice. Avoid mixing with coffee or tea.

Side Effects

Common: agitation, insomnia, anxiety, headache. Less common: somnolence, fatigue, dizziness, erectile dysfunction. May cause orthostatic hypotension and cardiovascular issues.
